Getting Ready for Delivery

Getting Ready for Delivery

There are as many different birth stories as there are people on this planet.  Although they may share similarities, they are all unique little people making their way into this world.  We are happy to be part of your story.  Our goals are simple- healthy Mom and healthy baby.

So how do you prepare for this grand adventure?

Options abound for getting help. The two hospitals where we deliver have birthing classes, breastfeeding classes and infant CPR classes.  In addition, Blooma Yoga has a lovely set of birth education classes as well as yoga, barre, and postpartum support classes.  Another option is to use a doula for classes and/or support in labor.  ( A doula is a professional trained in childbirth who provides emotional, physical, and educational support to a mother who is expecting, is experiencing labor, or has recently given birth. The doula’s purpose is to help women have a safe, memorable, and empowering birthing experience.) A doula may be more expensive  because they provide one-on-one education and support. Of course, there are a multitude of web sites, books and YouTube videos that offer instruction as well.  Be cognizant that these may not give as full of a picture of what usual labor looks like. We have included links below for the hospital classes, Blooma classes and area doulas.

Some patients find that making a “birth plan” is helpful in navigating labor. This is a list of what you would prefer during labor. We usually call them “birth preferences” as birth is somewhat fluid and you may find that you change your mind depending on what mother nature decides to bring.  Much like if you are driving to the store and a road is blocked by a parade, you may choose an alternate route or, perhaps, if you enjoy the parade you take the route you originally had planned.  We are happy to discuss this with you over the course of your pregnancy and labor.
